Why is the future of Humanity so uncertain?

We are Amazing But...

We have made remarkable advances in the last 50-60 years. I can honestly say that our technological advances will go beyond our expectations, but at the same time the future seems rather uncertain for the human race. The reason is not because of one or two problems, but a chain of issues that might keep us from going further.

The Earth is Pretty Old

Yes evolution has allowed us to adapt to the many changes the earth has gone through but let’s look at it this way; the earth is estimated to be 4.56 billion years old. You might have your perspective of how old the earth really is but the way I see it the earth is aging, you can tell by the environmental issues that our planet has, yes we in part accelerated some of them but they have been happening slowly way before humans were around. Some scientists even believe Venus was at some point, very similar to earth until its own atmosphere created the last stage of the global warming effect, not allowing heat to escape and cooking it self in hellish temperatures

Putting Our Money in the Wrong Place.

Now let’s take two products humanity would do a lot more without. If we put the alcohol and marijuana industry together we get somewhere around 205$ billion a year. If we were to put that money into space research, medical research, energy sources research, over one decade we would certainly begin to colonize space, see higher medical advances and let’s not forget find more stable energy sources other than oil. Now what would happen if we add the tobacco and video game industry? Even more progress in less time. What has stopped us from doing this? it’s all in the necessity.

Companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon (just to name a few), have done many things once though to be only possible in science fiction. Today we have millions of books at the touch of our fingers, we can find information about any topic almost everywhere at any time using our many technological devices. From the way that sounds space travel shouldn't sound so sci-fi, but the problem is as long as we don't have an advantageous reason to explore space , we are bond to read our fictional books to imagine it.

The point I'm trying to show by bringing up these big companies is, that they are responsible for many of our futuristic gadgets, and we are responsible for funding their research. You see if by any chance these gadgets did not catch our interests, they certainly would have found another branch of technology they could exploit or develop in order to have us, the costumers, buy from them.

Still fighting up to this day.
Still fighting up to this day.

War for Power.

Wars amongst ourselves can be traced back to the beginning of man. The problem is, instead of killing each other with rocks, we now have nuclear weapons. How many nuclear weapons does it take to destroy earth? Around 20. But let’s take into consideration that this type of technology keeps advancing and what now takes 20 bombs turns into 1. Yes is a scary though, and yes as long as we exist is very probable we will indeed keep fighting, we might as well never settle our differences and destroy ourselves.

Politics are Corrupted.

As long as we exist we will have politics, and they will always be corrupted. There are exceptions to this, but you have to see it this way. Is in our mentality as humans to always aim to satisfy our necessities over everyone else's. So we will never have a system in which all individuals benefit and can work towards a common goal. So as long as political leaders shall exist they will always attempt to satisfy their benefits or their groups before anyone else, like you and me.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I totally agree with you. Really wish we could get these big companies to take responsibility and stop being so selfish!

Nice insight.

Hope you can add that human being continue to used and abused anything they get their hands on with the majority don't have any regards to the consequences.

All they care about is money which they cant bring to their graves.

Cheers :D

spirit whisperer: Although I'm graceful for your feedback, not only have i seen the video before but I don't know how the video is relevant.

Even if the reality we are perceiving is deceptive,we should never forget the fact that we are ACTUALLY LIVING IT. in other words I believe that humanity problems do matter in our reality.

Thank you for getting back to me. You hit the nail on the head when you say we are perceiving but perceiving is more than just deceptive it has nothing to do with truth. When you say you "believe" then you are in effect buying in to the illusion your ego has made up for you. This is the human experience and most people don't even question it. The more energy you give to the illusions you "believe" to be "real" the more real they will be to you. There is a way out of this but the first step is acknowledging that you are indeed making it all up in your head!

I like it. It is a good approach of discussion of thought.

Very thought provoking. As long as the American people tolerate this things and continue to feed these systems by their own greed, I doubt anything will change. I applaud those currently protesting corporate greed.

We do face a depressingly uncertain future. As Will Rogers said; "You can't say civilization doesn't advance, for in every war they kill you in a new way."

....wow you're tackling a lot here with many heavyweight issues which may never be resolved but you certainly present them on such a world class level with much essential food for thought and you inspire your readers to think and debate - and that is inspiring in itself - thank you for your royal endorsement of my humble little hubpage - coming from a great writer and think such as yourself really means a lot!

Very thought provoking and easy to read. Lot of heavy stuff here (and a bit depressing, but not your fault, just one side of reality). Anyway, great hub. Loved the part about Venus. Never occurred to me that Venus could have looked like our planet at one time, or that could be our future. Nice job.

You have written an excellent essay on the shortcomings of humans. It's told in probing insight.

Hello, Fiction and life,

This is a very interesting, timely and thought-provoking post.

However, because I am 65 years old, I have been hearing about the world's "uncertain future" for a very long time now.

Back in the 1950's and 1960's, for instance, it was widely believed that earth was existing on borrowed time, because it appeared that it was on the brink of being destroyed by a massive nuclear war, consisting of the West vs. the East.

And I have read that every time there was an eclypse of some kind or the other, various ancient societies saw that as a prelude to the end of the world.

Good hub, I feel that using money to get off the planet however is not a good solution,

As a race, humans expand and destroy, we have never learnt how to live with each other, or anything else, exceptions are some nomadic tribes, our 'more progressive' societies have all but wiped out.

We should solve our issues and unite then contemplate expanding more.

Yes, we have learned to fight and learn to destroy each other but yet we have to learn how to live without fight.

Interesting hub. I believe that the world's future is uncertain, and I don't trust the politicians to do anything about it. It is up to us (thoses of us who have the time and the will) to do something to improve things.

There are lots of threats and source of possible problems in the future: Human destructing co-humans. Natural disasters. Death. Etc.
